Wil Tonkens worked as a lawyer and a university lecturer in the fields of private law and labour law. After transitioning to the judiciary, she was appointed vice-president of the Amsterdam District Court in 1988. She worked for years as a preliminary relief judge. Wil Tonkens also served as the chair of the Netherlands Association for the Judiciary (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Rechtspraak). After retiring, Wil joined ReulingSchutte.
Wil Tonkens’ practice consists primarily of acting as an arbitrator, binding advisor and independent chair. Wil is regularly asked to act as a confidential investigator in sensitive cases. As a former judge, she is often asked to play that role in moot court proceedings, during which a party prepares and presents arguments and Wil provides constructive feedback based on her expertise as a judge. During her long career as a judge, Wil Tonkens acquired a vast amount of dispute resolution experience.
Wil Tonkens has been an arbitrator with the Netherlands Arbitration Institute (NAI) for many years, and has served as a member of the NAI’s general management and the chair of the Supervisory Committee. Wil Tonkens has served as an arbitrator in national and international cases, a.o. in contract and liability disputes.
